Resume Not Getting Callbacks? The 6-Second Recruiter Test

If recruiters open your resume but you never hear back, the gap is almost always in the first 8 lines. That space — the summary, your most recent title, and the top two bullets — decides whether the recruiter keeps reading or moves on. No callback usually means no engagement past line 8.

The 6-second recruiter test

Place your finger over everything below the first 8 lines. What can you tell?

If you cannot read the target role, level, and one credible outcome in those 8 lines, neither can a recruiter.

  • Line 1–2: Name + clear role label
  • Line 3–4: Summary that signals fit, not just experience
  • Line 5–8: Most recent title + first bullet that is an outcome with a number

Three fixes that move the needle

1. Replace your summary with a one-sentence positioning line: role + years + domain + one signature outcome.

2. Front-load your most recent role with two quantified bullets. Save context bullets for later.

3. Mirror the JD's language without copying. If the role says "GTM partnerships", do not say "business development".

Formatting choices that quietly kill callbacks

Two-column layouts often parse incorrectly in ATS. Tables hide content from parsers. Custom fonts substitute on the recruiter's screen and push everything off the page. Stick to single-column, standard fonts, and a clean section order: Summary, Experience, Skills, Education.

Weak vs better

Top of resume — invisible

  • Summary: Hardworking professional with experience in software development
  • Senior Developer, Acme Corp
  • Worked on the platform team
  • Helped improve performance

Top of resume — recruiter-ready

  • Summary: Senior backend engineer (Go, Postgres) — 7 yrs scaling B2B SaaS to 50M req/day
  • Senior Backend Engineer, Acme Corp — 2022–Now
  • Cut p95 checkout latency 480ms → 90ms; recovered $1.1M/yr in abandoned carts
  • Led migration of 12 services to event-driven Kafka; reduced cross-service incidents 64%

Frequently asked questions

How long should my resume summary be?

One line. Two at most. The summary is a positioning statement, not a paragraph — recruiters skim it in under a second.

Should I include an objective?

No. Objectives describe what you want. Recruiters care about what you can do for them. Replace with a positioning summary.

Why are recruiters opening my resume but not replying?

Open without reply almost always means the top of the resume failed the 6-second scan. The recruiter saw the file but found no reason to keep reading.

Does a one-page resume help with callbacks?

For under 10 years of experience, yes. The constraint forces you to put outcomes at the top, where callbacks are decided.
